Relume Repigmentation Phototherapy system is a device
used for the treatment of stretch marks, also known as Leukoderma.
Lerkoderma is the absence or reduction in normal pigmentation. Sunlight
phototherapy for skin disorders has been successfully used for hundreds
of years. Relume therapy is an accurate, reliable, and convenient
treatment for numerous skin conditions. The Relume system delivers
highly concentrated therapeutic ultraviolet-B (UVB) light intended
for the medical treatment of conditions of lost skin pigmentation
(leukoderma). The light energy is developed to hypopigmented skin
without exposure to the healthy surrounding tissue. The UVB light
stimulates melanocytes and the production of melanin. A hand piece
is used to produce a uniform, circular beam that is emitted through
the output lens. Light is transmitted from the console to the hand
piece onto the skin.
It treats scars, stretch marks, Vitiligo, burns,
resurfaced skin, and other dermatological conditions that are white.
The most common side effect is redness and swelling,
which will appear within 4-24 hours and subside within several days.
Blistering and swelling may occur. Mild pain or itchiness can occur
within 48 hours of treatment.
The area should not be exposed to the sun for 24-48
hours before or after treatment. A consultation with Dr. Pilest must
be made prior to treatment. Patients must provide detailed information
on the nature of their problem. Dr. Pilest will discuss treatment
options, risks, benefits, complications, and anticipated outcomes.
Between treatments, patients are encouraged to avoid tanning booths
and excessive exposure to sunlight. Patients are also encouraged to
use a broad-spectrum sunscreen prior to going outdoors for extended
periods of time. Sunscreens can be purchased at Total Dermatology.
The number of treatments to achieve regimentation
is variable in each patient generally 10-20 treatments are necessary
and should be spaced weekly or biweekly. Maintenance treatments will
be necessary to retain the pigmentation and should be done on a monthly
basis Postoperative care is critical for assuring the best outcome.
Patients should avoid sun exposure 24-48 hours following the procedure.
There is no pain whatsoever. Local anesthesia
is not generally required.
